①【空間的に】near, close[klus](⇔far, distant)(◆nearよりも接近の度合いが大きい)
*私の学校は家から近い My school is near [close to,×near from] my house.
*このあたりでいちばん近い病院はどこですか Where is the nearest hospital around here?
*私は入り口にいちばん近い所にある絵が気に入った I like the picture nearest (to) the entrance.(◆比較変化したnearer, nearestは前置詞としても用いられるが,toを付けるほうがふつう)
*彼女は明かりに近い方へいすを動かした She moved her chair closer to the light.
◆*ゴールは近いぞ The goal is right up ahead. / これが家へ帰るいちばん近い道です This is the shortest way back home.
②【時間的に】near, close
*近い将来に in the near future / 試験が近い The exams are near [close] at hand.≒The exams are around the corner.
◆*ごく近い将来に in the immediate future / 近いうちに電話するよ I'll call you 「one of these days [soon]. / きのう寝たのは1時近かった It was nearly [almost, close to] one o'clock when I went to bed yesterday.
③【関係・程度・性質が】close, near
*近い親戚(しんせき) a close relative / 真空に近い状態 a near vacuum condition
*英語はドイツ語に近い English is close [similar] to German.
*彼女の答えは完璧(かんぺき)に近かった Her answer was 「close to [almost] perfect.
*(正解などに)近いですよ You're [That's] close.
*彼の考え方が私のに最も近い His views are closest [nearest] to my own.
*私たちは年が近い We are close in age.
*この人工芝は天然の芝に限りなく近い This artificial turf is the closest [nearest] thing to natural turf.
◆*私が彼女に将棋で勝つなんて不可能に近い It's almost [nearly, next to] impossible for me to beat her at shogi.(◆next toは否定的な意味合いの語の前で用いられる) / 彼の野球選手生命も終わりに近い His career as a baseball player is coming to an end. / 冬になるとトイレが近くなるものだ In winter, people go to the bathroom more often.
④【数が】almost, nearly;(およそ)about
*100人近い人がバスを待っていた Almost [Nearly] one hundred people were waiting for the bus.
*祖父は90近い My grandfather is almost [nearly, close to, going on,《口語的》pushing] ninety.
