[語法]
(1)illnessは「病気である状態［期間］」を意味する語.sicknessは「病気・吐き気」を意味するが,特に《英》では通例「吐き気」の意味で用いる.diseaseは「具体的な病名のつく病気」を指す.
(2)「病気の」「病気にかかっている」というとき,《米》では通例sickを用い,illはややかたい言い方になる.《英》ではillを用いるのがふつうで,sickは「吐き気がする」の意味で使う.ただし,名詞の前で用いる場合は《英》でも通例sickを用いる.

*彼の病気はかなり進行していた His disease was rather advanced.
