①【目に映る】see(他)(自)（◆進行形不可.しばしばcan, couldとともに用いる）;（現れる）show(自)
*晴れた日にはここから大島が見えます　You can see Oshima from here on a clear day.
*ここからだとその建物はよく見えない　I can't see the building well from here.
*私は注意して見たが何も見えなかった　I looked carefully but saw nothing.
*彼が演壇に上がるのが見えた　We saw him appear on the podium.
*彼女の顔には心配の色が見えた　The worry showed on her face.
*下着が見えてますよ　Your underwear is showing.
◆*霧の中からすばらしい城が見えてきた　A grand castle came into sight [view] out of the fog. / その男の子は飛行機が見えなくなるまで手を振り続けた　The boy kept on waving till the plane went out of sight. / その星は肉眼でもはっきり見える　The star is clearly visible even to the naked eye. / 放射能は目に見えない　Radioactivity is invisible. / 彼はキーボードを扱うのが目に見えてうまくなった　He made noticeable progress in operating the keyboard.
②【思われる】look(自);（主観的に）seem(自),appear(自)（◆seemよりも形式ばった語）
*あのカメラは高そうに見える　That camera ｢looks expensive [has an expensive look].
*あなたは彼が正直な男だと言うが,私にはそんなふうには見えない　You say he is an honest man, but he doesn't seem that way to me.
*その動物はイタチのように見えた　The animal looked like a weasel.
*この写真だと彼は実際よりずっと若く見える　This photo makes him look much younger than he really is.
*よっぽど気に入ったと見えて彼は毎日その店に通っている　It seems that he likes the store very much, because he goes there every day.
◆*彼はどう見ても70代には見えない（→70代であるはずがない）　To all appearances, he can't be in his 70s.
[会話]
*「麻子は最近少しやせたらしいわよ」「あら本当？そうは見えないけど」　“I heard Asako lost some weight recently.” “Oh, really? She doesn't look like it.”
③【視力がある】
*猫は暗がりでも目が見える　Cats can see even in the dark.
*私は眼鏡なしではよく見えない　I don't [can't] see well without my glasses.
*私は片方の目が見えない　I am blind in one eye.
*彼女はその事故で目が見えなくなった（→失明した）　She lost her eyesight in the accident.
*彼はその手術で目が見えるようになった　His eyesight was restored by the operation.
④【察知される・推測できる】
*日本経済にようやく回復のきざしが見え始めた　Finally the Japanese economy began to show signs of recovery.
*彼には全く反省の色が見えなかった　He showed no signs of regret.
*このレースでだれが勝つかはちょっと見えないね　You can't judge who will win this race.
*そろそろ結果が見えてきた　The result is beginning to take shape.（◆take shapeは「形になる」の意味）((①より移動))

*会長がお見えになりました　The president has arrived.
◆*渡辺さん,お客様がお見えです　You have a visitor, Mr. Watanabe.
⑥【書物などに書かれている】
*その寺の名前はすでに鎌倉時代に書かれた文献に見える（→現れる）　The name of the temple appears in the document written in the Kamakura period.
