【理由を・に】
*なぜこんなに遅れたのか理由を言いなさい　Tell me (the reason) why you were so late.（◆口語ではしばしばthe reasonが省略される）
*彼女はいつも何かと理由をつけて体育の授業を休む　She is always absent from her PE class for one excuse or another.
*彼女は仕事を理由に彼とのデートを断った　She turned down a date with him under [on] the pretext of having to work.
*目覚まし時計が鳴らなかったからなんて遅刻の理由にならない　Your alarm not going off is no excuse for being late.

【理由で】
*こういう［健康上の,宗教上の］理由で　for this [health, religious] reason

*どういう理由であんなふるまいをしたんだ　What's the reason for such behavior?≒Why did you behave like that?
◆*彼はただ単に自分がそうしたいからという理由でそうしたのだった　He did it simply because he wanted to do it. / 彼女は金銭的な理由で英会話学校をやめた　She left the English language school ｢because of money [for money reasons].
【その他】
*私はこれといった理由もなく文学部に進んだ　I entered the school of literature ｢without any [for no] particular reason.
*ちゃんとした理由もないのにそんなことを言うな　Don't say such things without good reason [cause].
