【説明を始めるとき】[基本]
*Let me explain it to you. 説明させてください.
*This is the way you do it. こうやってやるんだよ.
[応用]
*(A) I'm going to describe it for you. これから説明させていただきます.
*(B) I can describe the man to you. その男の特徴を説明できますが.
*(C) I will show you how to do it. やり方を（見せて）説明します.
*(D) Let me give an example to illustrate the point. 例を出してポイントを説明しましょう.
*★(E) Please allow me to demonstrate. 説明させていただいてもよろしいですか.
(C)(D) showを使うと実際に見せながら説明することになる.illustrateは例を出したり図を使ったりして分かりやすく説明するときに使う.(E)のdemonstrateは実際に物を見せて実演するという意味.allow meとするとlet meよりフォーマルになる.
【内容を明らかにするとき】
[基本]
*I'll try to make it clearer. もっと分かりやすく言ってみます.
*I'd like to make myself clear. はっきりと述べさせていただきます.
*Please let me clarify that point. その点を明らかにさせてください.
[応用]
*(A) Did I make myself clear? 私が言っていることが分かりますか.
*(B) Did he help you understand it better? 彼は分かりやすく言ってくれましたか？
*(C) She needs to clear up the matter. 彼女はその問題をはっきりさせる必要がある.
*(D) Can you clarify that point? その点を明確にしてくれますか.
*☆(E) Let's get this straight. このことをはっきりさせておきましょう.
*★(F) Let's see if I can resolve your questions. 質問にお答えできるかどうかやってみましょう.
*★(G) Did I shed any light on the situation? （私の説明で）状況を明らかにできたでしょうか.
(A)はちょっと厳しい感じを相手に与える.(G)のshed [cast] light on ‥は「…をはっきりさせる」というフォーマルな表現で,講義の初めや論文などの書き出しによく使われる.例:In this article, I hope to shed light on....（この記事において…について明らかにしたいと思います）
【例を挙げるとき】
[基本]
*I'll give you an example. 例を挙げます.
*For example, try it this way. 例えば,こうやってみたら.
[応用]
*(A) You could go there, for instance. 例えば,君が行くこともできるよ.
*(B) This is a sample of her work. これが彼女の作品のサンプルです.
*(C) This is one model of their product line. これが彼らの商品の見本です.
*(D) This is representative of their business practices. これが彼らのビジネス内容の典型です.
【例を挙げてもらうとき】
