【理由を聞く】[基本]
*Why? なぜ？
*How come? どうして？
*What happened? 何が起きたの？
*What for? 何のために？
*Why did you do that? なぜそうしたの？
[応用]
*(A) What makes you think that? どうしてそう思うの？
*(B) What's the reason you missed the meeting? 会議に出なかった理由は何ですか.
*(C) What caused your headache? なぜ頭痛がするの？
*(D) Can you explain why you did it? なぜそうしたのか説明できますか.
*(E) What was your motive for doing that? それをした動機は何だったのですか？
*★(F) Could you describe the rationale behind [for] that decision? その決断をした真意について説明してくださいますか.
*★(G) On what grounds were you let go? 首になった理由は何ですか.
*★(H) How do you justify your actions? あなたの行動はどう正当化するのですか.
how comeは口語的で強い驚きを表す.whyと違って,how comeの後はHow come you were late?のように肯定文の語順になることに注意.What for?はFor what?とも表現でき,Why?と同じ意味になる.同様に「だれのために？」はFor who?となる.(G)のgroundsは「理由」「根拠」という意味で使われており,on the grounds of ‥≒on grounds of ‥≒on the grounds that ‥という形で使われる.文語的な響きがある.(H) justifyは「正当化する」という意味で,「正しいという理由を述べる」ということ.
【理由を述べる】
[基本]
*I'll tell you why. わけをお話しします.
*I did it because ‥. …のためやったのです.
[応用]
*(A) She made me do it. 彼女が私にそうさせた.
*(B) I thought it was the right thing to do. 正しいことだと思ったのでやった.
*(C) The thing is, I missed the bus. 実はバスに乗り遅れてしまって.
*★(D) I was hurt due to a fall. 転倒したことでけがをした.
*★(E) It happened as a result of my error. それは私の間違いが元で起こったことだ.
＜順を追って理由を説明する場合＞
*(F) It started like this. こういう感じで始まったんだ.
*(G) To make a long story short, .... 要するにこういうわけなんだ.
*(H) I disagree for the following reasons. 私は次の理由で反対です.
*(I) For one thing, she's honest, and for another she's cheerful. 第一に彼女は正直です.それに明るい.
(E)のas a result of ‥「…が元で」はイディオムで,やや形式ばった言い方.
