①【数・量が】a lot of ‥, lots of ‥, plenty of ‥;（数が）many, a (good, large) number of ‥;（量が）much
[語法]口語ではa lot of, lots ofが最も一般的で,可算名詞・不可算名詞のいずれにも用いることができる.またplenty ofには「十分に・たっぷりある」というニュアンスがある.以上の表現を単数・複数のいずれに扱うかは,ofの後にくる名詞に従う.疑問文や否定文ではふつう可算名詞にはmany,不可算名詞にはmuchを用いる.a (good, large) number ofは複数名詞を伴い,複数扱い.
*今年は雪が多い There has been a lot of snow this year.≒We've had a lot of snow this year.*ニューヨークには訪ねたい場所がとても多い There are a good number of places to visit in New York.*このあたりは韓国料理の店が多い There are many Korean restaurants around here.*彼は苦労が多かった He suffered many hardships.*パーティーに来た人は多くはなかった Not many people came to the party.（◆Many people didn't come to the party.は「多くの人がパーティーに来なかった」の意味）*宿題が多すぎて休み中どこにも遊びに行けなかった I couldn't go anywhere during the vacation because I had too much homework.◆*彼らには共通点が多い They have a lot in common. / 牛乳にはカルシウムが多い Milk is rich in calcium. / 横浜は大阪市よりも人口が多い Yokohama has a larger population than Osaka City. / 彼女の洋服だんすには黒い服が多い Her wardrobe is full of black clothes. / アメリカでの食事の量は日本よりかなり多い The portions are much bigger in America than in Japan. / 月曜日の朝は交通量が多い Traffic is heavy on Monday morning. / 私のクラスは男子より女子が多い Girls outnumber boys in my class.（◆outnumberは「…を数で上回る」という意味） / 僕が1日に読めるのは多くて10ページだ I can read 10 pages a day at most.
