明王

[日本事物]明王とは,救いがたい人々を畏怖させて煩悩を砕き,力強く仏の道に導くために如来から遣わされた諸尊のことで,ふつう恐ろしい形相をしています.代表的な明王はしばしばお不動さんと呼ばれる不動明王で,炎を背にし,右手に剣,左手に羂索(けんさく)を持った姿で表されます.[参照]⇒ぼさつ,にょらいA myoo, or Vidyaraja is a being sent by a nyorai to forcefully lead sinful people to Buddhism by frightening them and make them overcome their earthly passions. A myoo usually has a frightening face. The most famous myoo is Fudo‐Myoo, or Acalanatha Vidyaraja, who is often called “Ofudo‐san.” He is depicted with flames in the background, holding a sword in his right hand and a rope in his left hand.
